College pedagogy

This last paragraph from an interview with Professor Eric Mazur (see here) is delicious. And puts the finger on a great problem at our higher education system.

Mazur: Absolutely. You want to be a lawyer, you have to pass the bar exam. You want to be a doctor, you have to pass all kinds of exams. You want to teach in a kindergarten, you need to have certification. But if you want, on the other hand, to teach the next generation of leaders—and you want to teach in higher education—simply by virtue of a PhD degree you are supposed to know exactly how to educate people. It just doesn’t make sense.

I have a degree in teaching math and sciences, not for higher education, but when we join to discuss pedagogy or didactics some of my colleagues see some of that ideas for the first time, and we are training and teachers!

Hope that more colleagues of mine see the same, and try to learn, read and think about how to deliver quality lessons and learning experiences for our students so that they can be great teachers.
Maybe in a generation or two, we stand here discussing other minor matters.
